What is Kanya Pujan?
Kanya Pujan – also called Kanjak, Kanjakan (Punjab), Kumari Puja (Bengal) or Kumari Bhojan (Bihar) – is the Navratri ritual in which young girls are honoured as living forms of Goddess Durga. Families wash the girls' feet, apply a tilak, tie a red thread (mauli) on their wrists, serve a festive meal and send them home with gifts and blessings.
Why nine girls – and why a boy?
Traditionally nine girls are invited, one for each of the nine forms of Durga worshipped during Navratri. Many families also invite one boy, called "Langur" or Batuk Bhairav. The belief comes from the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, which is considered complete only after visiting Bhairav's shrine – in the same way, Kanjak is complete with the Langur, who gets the same halwa, puri and chana.
What age should the girls be?
Girls are usually between 2 and 10 years old. Each age is linked to a form of the Goddess: 2 – Kumari, 3 – Trimurti, 4 – Kalyani, 5 – Rohini, 6 – Kalika, 7 – Shambhavi, 8 – Durga, 9 – Chandika and 10 – Subhadra.
The Kanjak menu
The classic bhog is sooji halwa, puri and kala chana, prepared sattvic (without onion and garlic). In Punjabi homes the girls may get karah parshad, a red chunni, red bangles and a bindi. In Bengal, girls receive alta, new clothes and jewellery. Konkani families anoint them with kumkum and sandalwood and give bangles and dakshina.
A fact you may not know
Swami Vivekananda started Kumari Puja at Belur Math in 1901, and nine girls were worshipped that first year. The tradition continues there every Maha Ashtami. In Bengal, Assam and Odisha, Ashtami also includes Sandhi Puja at the exact junction of the Ashtami and Navami tithis – in 2026, around 10:27–11:15 AM on 19 October in Delhi.
